hi there

i have a few questions about wind:
1. i want to make a tablet pc - i want to mount display with touch screen on side with MB - i don't know how i can explain it better; i want to remove the keyboard and over this area i will mount permanently LCD with touch
and now: how use a "blue" keys form fn+ combination without standard keyboard?
2. touchpad is connected to usb?

Sorry for my EN - I'm bro from PL
I'm not noob - I'm mod from Polish MSI Wind Forum ;]

Yay, someone has the same exact idea as I do :)

I have done exactly as you have described with my U100 about a week ago. I did it the day before I left town, so I have not had time to get pictures up. It is a very simple mod if you know what you are doing. I accidentally broke my touch panel during the process. What you must do is:

1) Remove the keyboard. This requires removing the battery and pressing 3 metal tabs to make the keyboard pop up and reveal the motherboard connector.
2) Mounting the LCD where the keyboard used to be. You will have to wire the LCD connector cable through the motherboard to the other side where it connects. I wired the cable through the fan on the side where the spinning fan will not hit it.
3) remove the trackpad ribbon from the motherboard as it will no longer be used.

Trust me, this mod is really amazing once it is finished. Your Wind is basically turned into one of those expensive JooJoo's. Give me about a week and I'll have a guide on how to do this :)

That's the hardest part. It'. nearly impossible to extend the internal keyboard, and there is not many external keyboards with the FN key.

So you have an external ykeyboard with an FN key? Give FN-F11 a try on it and see if it works just like the internal.

Ok, we need someone with one of these keyboards to test it for us. I need to buy one of them also if someone can confirm that it works.

Also, keep in mind that after doing this mod, you will have trouble travelling with it. I just had three people pull me to the side in the airport while running my Wind through the Xray machine. They had no clue what I had built :D

Could you explain why you had a trouble?

I've tried map fn key by sharpkeys program but it don't recognise it like key...
Probably it's recognising only by bios and we need a modded bios like fn-ctrl swap and fn+ctrl mod to power wifi bla bla

I haven't tried to remap a key with the FN key, but I should. Modding the BIOS seems to be the only way, and it will probably be very difficult.

And pictures as promised. The first one was taken about a week ago when I first did the mod, and the other two were taken today. As you can see, I have also done some OS X customization :)

LOOKS GREAT!!! :)

If you could just find a way to remove that tape, and use something else to hold it down, it will be perfect!

Loving the OSX Customisation too!

Question, how do you access the power switch?

EDIT: Video please?

Yep, it does need a lot of work where the tape is. The bezel has not been sanded all the way yet, so the tape really shows up on the bottom. It will probably also need to be painted once sanded all the way.

For the power switch, I drilled a small hole in the bezel and am temporarily using a paperclip to turn it on and off. Still not exactly sure how that will turn out. :)

Nice way to turn it on :P

You should look into doing something like c0ff33 and having buttons next to the screen.

I tipped Engadget, hope its okay with you alexbates?

Also, the power button. You could make your own, and slot it into the hole you drilled? Or buy one. That could work.

Rewiring the power button may be a little challenging, so I'll hold off on that. Cutting a piece of plastic to fit in the drilled hole will be easy though, so I will do that in the next day.

If Engadget sees this thread, hold off for about a week while I pull this mod together. What I think people will be most interested in is the fact that you can build an iPad with 10 times the storage, twice the speed, external video (VGA), webcam, USB ports, and built-in multi card reader, all for $350. Isn't that EXACTLY what hundreds of thousands of people have been wishing for since the first day the iPad was announced?

Also, I need to make a demo video once I get my touch panel working properly again. And I need to take pictures of how I have rewired the WiFi antenna. And then, of course, remove the large, bulky 9 cell battery and replace it with a very lightweight 3 cell.
